What's life like for UM-Dearborn student Rasika Pawar?

July 18, 2022

In this summer series, UM-Dearborn students share what life is like outside of the classroom and into their homes. This week, Rasika Pawar 鈥 an international student who came to campus for graduate school 鈥 talks about the importance of creating a home, especially when family is more than 8,000 miles away.

Her hometown:

鈥淚鈥檓 from Belgaum, Karnataka, India, and I currently live in Fairlane Meadows 鈥 just a stone鈥檚 throw away from campus.鈥

Living away from family鈥hat鈥檚 it like:

鈥淚 love it because I get to learn new things, be independent and adapt to living without the comforts I鈥檓 used to 鈥 all while trying to make my new place a home. I believe that no matter where you live, you can create your own sense of home. My decor isn鈥檛 where I want it to be yet, but I feel very comfortable here.鈥

Favorite thing about her apartment:

鈥淗aving good roommates. I spoke to one of my roommates before moving in; we met via mutual friends and connected instantly. But I hadn鈥檛 really met anyone until moving in. The resources provided by the university helped me find the people I eventually chose to room with. We cook together 鈥 my favorite dish to make is butter chicken 鈥 and we explore what鈥檚 around here together. I really like going to Hines Drive; the sunsets there are just magical.鈥

Something you would like people to know:

鈥淎 new home is exciting, but it can be a tough transition. You meet new people in a new country and start a new degree program 鈥 plus you have to rethink how you handle money, like the adaptation of the currency rates. Even when you have prepared, there is a lot to learn. But there is also a lot of support here. If you have a question, ask. I鈥檝e learned that people want to help.鈥

What鈥檚 good about having a separation between campus life/home life:

鈥淚t can be very quiet. It鈥檚 nice when I need to study, but I also want to meet people. That鈥檚 why I often go to campus. Visiting the campus and the areas surrounding has given me the desired exposure that I wanted when I came here. I鈥檝e also found a job on campus 鈥 working on campus has given me even more leverage to meet new people and develop campus connections.鈥

How she gets from here to there:

鈥淭here鈥檚 a campus shuttle 鈥 that solved my concerns when it came to commuting to and from campus. Even when you don鈥檛 have a car, getting around has been relatively easy because the people I鈥檝e met here that do have a car are really helpful. The campus is comparatively smaller than other universities, which is a huge plus in building strong bonds.鈥
