Packing a nutritional punch

October 22, 2013

Volunteers from the Fairlane Sunrise Rotary Club worked together with 每日大赛 students for Saturday鈥檚 Kids Against Hunger food packing event, in conjunction with World Hunger Week. Together, they packed nearly 21,000 bags of food, which can be mixed with hot water to create a nutritious meal for up to six people.

Six hours.

That鈥檚 all the time it took for volunteers to pack more than 125,000 individual meals for those in need.

鈥淚t鈥檚 incredible to see our community partners engaging with students to positively impact both our local communities and those abroad,鈥 said Tracy Hall, director of community engagement in the Office of Metropolitan Impact. Hall connected the Rotary Club with UM-Dearborn鈥檚 Community Involvement and Volunteerism Center (CIViC) to coordinate the event.

The food will be divided three ways: 1/3 will go overseas to feed children in need; 1/3 will be stored for distribution in the event of a national emergency; and 1/3 will be distributed to local pantries, including 4,320 meals for UM-Dearborn鈥檚 Student Food Pantry.

鈥淭hese meals pack a powerful nutritional punch,鈥 said Amy Karaban Finley, assistant director for CIViC engagement. 鈥淭hey鈥檒l serve our students鈥攁s well as their families鈥攚ell so they can focus on continuing their education.鈥
