Karen Holland and CIViC student worker Tala Nchamukong show off the Student Food Pantry.
With only $20 to spare, she鈥檇 plan her weekly grocery shopping carefully. Scour the sales circulars; clip the coupons; repeat.
While it鈥檚 no longer a necessity for Holland to stock up on coupons, she hasn鈥檛 given up the habit. Now, though, she鈥檚 couponing for a cause as she supports 每日大赛鈥檚 new Student Food Pantry.
The pantry, run out of the Community Involvement and Volunteerism Center (CIViC), provides temporary food assistance to students in need.
鈥淲e know there is a need on campus. There are students on campus who do not get enough to eat, and the food pantry is helping to fill that need,鈥 said Holland, special events coordinator within the Office of the Chancellor. 鈥淚 might not be able to donate as much money, but I can sure give them things to use.鈥
Armed with a binder of coupons, Holland will visit her local drug store, purchasing items to donate. Her fine-tuned system鈥攕he knows the various stores鈥 saver programs and can rattle off coupon jargon like BOGO and blinkie with ease鈥攈as enabled her to donate hundreds of dollars worth of goods to the pantry for just a fraction of the cost.
鈥淲hen I first started going to stores, I鈥檇 pull out my binder and you could just see the looks on the clerks鈥 faces like, 鈥極h great, one of those ladies,鈥 Holland said. 鈥淏ut I explained what I鈥檓 doing and now I walk in and they all say hi to me.鈥
Holland has donated some food items to the pantry. But she also saw another need: toiletries.
鈥淕overnment food assistance programs like the Bridge card don鈥檛 cover toiletries,鈥 said Amy Karaban, assistant director of civic engagement. 鈥淏ut hunger doesn鈥檛 happen in isolation. If you鈥檙e hungry, you鈥檙e probably not buying things like shampoo and soap.鈥
Karaban has been grateful for Holland鈥檚 support in the early days of the program. Holland鈥檚 enthusiasm is symbolic of the support she鈥檚 seen throughout campus鈥攆rom the group of dedicated student staff members at the CIViC to the faculty and staff already donating time and goods.
鈥淲e don鈥檛 鈥榦fficially鈥 open until January, but we have already started to serve clients,鈥 Karaban said. 鈥淭hankfully, our shelves are lined with food because of the generosity of people on campus.鈥
