Car Care Tips

You can keep your car running smoothly and efficiently, while at the same time help to prevent stormwater pollution by taking these easy steps...

  • When changing vehicle fluids - motor oil, transmission, brake and radiator fluids-rain them into separate drip pans to avoid spills. Do not combine these fluids. Do not dispose of these fluids in the street, gutter, or garbage. It is illegal. Visit to locate a recycling center near you for such products. Or, have your vehicle fluids professionally changed at an auto shop.
  • If a spill occurs, use kitty litter, sawdust or cornmeal for cleanup and dispose of in your trash. Do not hose or rinse with water.
  • Regularly check and maintain your car to keep it running safely and efficiently.
  • Water runoff from streets, parking lots and driveways can pick up oil and grease drippings, zinc from tires and organic compounds and metals from spilled fuels and carries them untreated to the Rouge River.
  • Pollutants from car washing end up in the storm drain. Wash your car on your lawn or at the car wash.

Storm Water Pollution Prevention

Storm drains on campus go directly to the Rouge River. So, if you see a spill/illicit discharge to a campus storm drain; immediately contact Public Safety at 313-593-5333.

Storm Drains are for Rain...

  • Never dispose of automotive fluids in the street or gutter since they will directly flow to the Rouge River, lakes or streams in your community.
  • Take automotive fluids to your local auto parts store, repair shop, or household hazardous waste center for recycling.
  • Just four quarts of oil spilled down a storm drain causes an eight acre oil slick on a rive or lake.

...not automotive fluids.
