Pesticide Tips

You can keep your lawn and garden green and at the same time help solve the pollution problem by taking these easy steps...

  • More is not better. Use pesticides sparingly. 鈥淪pot鈥 apply, rather than 鈥渂lanket鈥 apply.
  • Read labels! Use only as directed.
  • Never dispose of lawn or garden chemicals in storm drains. This is illegal dumping.
  • .
  • Use non-toxic products for your garden and lawn, whenever possible.
  • When watering your lawn, use the least amount of water possible so it doesn鈥檛 run into the street and carry pesticide chemicals with it.
  • Don鈥檛 use pesticides before a rain storm. You will not only lose the pesticides, you will also be harming the environment.
  • Store pesticides in leak-proof, water-proof, and sealed containers.

Storm Water Pollution Prevention

Storm drains on campus go directly to the Rouge River. So, if you see a spill/illicit discharge to a campus storm drain; immediately contact Public Safety at 313-593-5333.

Storm Drains are for Rain...

  • Never dispose of automotive fluids in the street or gutter since they will directly flow to the Rouge River, lakes or streams in your community.
  • Take automotive fluids to your local auto parts store, repair shop, or household hazardous waste center for recycling.
  • Just four quarts of oil spilled down a storm drain causes an eight acre oil slick on a rive or lake.
