Painting Tips
Painting Tips
All paints and solvents contain toxic chemicals that can be dangerous to people and harmful to the environment. Please handle these products carefully by taking these easy steps...
- Never dispose of paint or paint-related products in the gutters or storm drains. This is called illegal dumping. Visit to locate a recycling center near you.
- Buy only what you need.
- Reuse leftover paint for touch-ups or donate it to a local theater group.
- Recycle excess paint.
- Clean water-based paint brushes in the sink.
- Oil-based paints should be cleaned with thinner that can be reused. Set the used thinner aside in a closed jar to settle-out paint particles.
- Store paints and paint-related products in rigid, durable watertight containers with tight-fitting covers.
Storm Water Pollution Prevention
Storm drains on campus go directly to the Rouge River. So, if you see a spill/illicit discharge to a campus storm drain; immediately contact Public Safety at 313-593-5333.
Storm Drains are for Rain...
- Never dispose of automotive fluids in the street or gutter since they will directly flow to the Rouge River, lakes or streams in your community.
- Take automotive fluids to your local auto parts store, repair shop, or household hazardous waste center for recycling.
- Just four quarts of oil spilled down a storm drain causes an eight acre oil slick on a rive or lake.
...not automotive fluids.
